The fairy tale of the Grateful Crane

08/01/2006

It's been about 14 years since I was engaged in hand weaving job. I have been insufficiently trained, but it was not until recently that my weaving machine has come to listen to me at long last. When I say to people, I create my works with a weaving machine. Most of them are curious to ask me, Do you mean that weaving machine described in the fairy tale of The Grateful Crane? Yes, I do. It is exactly that machine in the fairy tale of the Grateful Crane.

The Crane plucks its feathers every night and completes weaving beautiful piece goods without its weaving being watched by anyone. My case is not applicable to the tale, but there may be something common between us that we don”Ēt want to have much of our weaving watched by anyone else. The more beautifully a roll of cloth is woven in finish, the more likely my workshop is a battle field. Suffering from being in solitude and back pain, I keep weaving at the loom day after day.

Upholding a skill of weaving, which is one of the Japanese traditional crafts, I would continue to show I would express a new phase in my work.. I wish every day I could create such a work. Textile is a constantly advancing field and only Seirando continues to weave rolls of cloth of their own to be materialized. And how I wish to see those who are deeply fascinated by such works of mine in the field where mass production is not possible in hand weaving.

Traveling is my hobby. I would fee like touching those cultures of various countries ranging from southern islands to Europe to Asia. Lately I have traced roots of the Japanese patterns of my home country, Japan or sometimes I hit the road to search for various kinds of cloth. Also, I am sure to visit art exhibits which show cloths woven by ancient people all over the world. When I happen to find their wrong ways of weaving, I enjoy the moment of catching glimpse of the same humanity in them as that in me.

Looking at many things to feel them in my bones may be the source of my creating works. Sometimes I have to dye threads from scratch, because I do not find the colored threads that meet my image requirements. I think about a way of weaving that is impossible to be seen in mass products circulated in the marketplace, and try to express a beautiful touch woven by cross-threads. With those aspirations at heart, I step on the weaver one step after another today.
